Why Do We Get Sick Right When We Take Time Off?
I’ve noticed something, and maybe you have too. You plan time off. A vacation. A few days to reset. And then, right when it starts, you get sick.
I wanted to see if there’s any science behind that.
There isn’t one single, clear explanation, but there is something interesting around how the immune system behaves. When you’ve been running at full pace for a while, your body is in a certain state. Once you stop, even briefly, things shift.
Some research suggests that immune responses can fluctuate when your routine changes. Your body starts to recalibrate. It’s almost like it’s catching up.
It doesn’t mean taking time off makes you sick. But the timing isn’t always a coincidence either.
I’ve seen it happen more than once. It’s happened to me.
And I know at least two other people who’ve experienced the exact same thing. You plan the break, you look forward to it, and then your body decides that’s the moment to slow you down.
So now, I plan to plan it a bit differently. Just a few small things to support my system before I switch off.
I start taking my vitamins a few days before time off.
I focus on vitamin C and vitamin D.
I add zinc when I feel like I might be coming down with something.
I try to stay hydrated, especially before travel.
Simple things. Nothing extreme. Just giving your body a bit of support as it shifts from one pace to another.
It’s not a guarantee. But it helps.
And at the very least, you go into your time off feeling a bit more prepared.
Because the goal is simple…You take time off to feel better. Not worse.
