Oh Philips... (A product review)

Oh Philips - you did it again.

I received a gift from a good friend.  I emphasize 'good' because she knew for a fact that I would find this gift useful.  And my God did it make my life a notch simpler.

Behold, the Philips Soup Maker:

At first glance, I thought it was a blender that purees.  But when I opened the box and found a recipe book, a metal thermos that meant it heats up - I was intrigued.

So basically, this nifty thing actually heat cooks the vegetables and then purees them according to your preference.  It prepares your soup/sauce in less than 15 minutes (although website says 20 mins).  It prepares your soup, sauce, compote or smoothie without the need to fry, dice, boil, chop, or any other annoying/time-consuming kitchen task.

So instead of my boring home dinners that I have no energy to actually make, I can now have a heart-warming hot soup for dinner.

There are a total of 5 settings.  From left: puree, chunky, compote, smoothie and manual.  The fact that there is a manual blender is so convenient!  Just in case there is a stray tomato chunk or if you want to control the texture.

The recipe book they include in the box is pretty good too.  I tried the tomato soup - a delicious puree that uses no cream so it's perfect for those watching their weight (me for the past x number of years).

The recipe calls for:
650 grams of tomatoes (around 7 tomatoes)
Half a white onion
I added a small bunch of parsley
1 clove garlic (I increased it to 2 because my kids love garlic)
500 mL of vegetable stock (which equates to 1 Maggi bouillon mixed in with water)
1 teaspoon of sugar
Salt and pepper
And that's it folks!

Basically, I rough chopped both tomatoes and onions, and dumped all ingredients in the thermos. Note: I apologize for no 'after' picture.  I had to serve my starving kids the food immediately and had no time to take a picture.
Rough chop
Handful of parsley - make the recipe your own with your favorite herb
The assembly - dump everything and you're set!

Things I LOVE about the Soup Maker:
- It uses no oil whatsoever
- No need to monitor it - just plug it in and leave it alone.
- Keeps food warm for 40 minutes  (according to website, didn't actually try it as I was excited to try out the soup the moment the beep sounded)
- It eliminates tedious kitchen tasks like dissecting a tomato into a million smithereens
- It's one-pot cooking, which means, less clean up (perfect for lazy people)
- The size/capacity of the appliance is just right.  It doesn't take up too much counter space and the food it prepares is enough for 4 starters or 2 soups-for-dinner.
- It's versatile - you don't have to follow the recipes exactly.  For instance, I used the same tomato soup recipe but used less water and turned it into tomato sauce for my kids' pasta dinner!

Things that bugged me (I should say thing because there is only one flaw to it):
- The steam it emits is quite a lot and can cause 'wet walls' (sort of like the effect a dryer has on your dryer room wall).  Just make sure you give it plenty of open space and perhaps switch on the exhaust fan or crack open a window.

Not that the steam deterred me from using it nor should it you!  The steam is negligible honestly because of the humongous convenience this soup maker provides.  The soup/sauce was healthy, delicious, and prepared in such an efficient way that it's my new best friend.

You will LOVE it.
